A few days before the start of a new season in the world of rallying, bad news reaches all fans of this sport and – in general – of Italian motoring. The legend Sandro Munari, ‘de facto’ champion in 1977 and career winner of 7 world championship rallies, with 14 total podiums, is in fact hospitalized in very serious conditions. To communicate this sad news was his wife Flavia, through a post on Facebook published on a group dedicated to the legendary driver. “Sandro has been hospitalized since yesterday – reads the message published on the popular social network – it’s pretty bad, I can’t be with him even for a minute and that kills me. I’ve never left him alone for at least two months now and I can’t think of him in pain and confusion without anyone holding his hand or stroking his forehead. I ask you a prayer for him so that he can come home to us for a little while longer … “.
Nicknamed ‘The Dragon’, Munari, who is now 81 years old (he will turn 82 at the end of March), was one of the great symbols of the mythical Lancia. With the Italian company he won the Monte-Carlo Rally for three consecutive years, from 1975 to 1977, setting himself up as an absolute reference point in sport. In his career he also remembers the vintages with the Fiat 131 Abarth. Munari had already defeated Covid in March 2020, during the first wave of the pandemic. Now again he finds himself having to fight a tough battle. This time too, however, the fans are all lined up on his side, as in the days of the triumphs behind the wheel of his Stratos.
