“PURELY The New Music Competition (UMK), which calls itself a ‘non-political cultural event’, has attracted exceptional political attention just below the competition.

It sounds a bit contradictory, given that Yle made an exceptionally direct statement on Friday stating that it will not send a participant to Eurovision if Russia participates in the competition. The reason is Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.

Later on Friday night, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) announced that Russia will not be represented at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Thus, a participant will be seen from Finland on 18-22. at the Eurovision Song Contest in Turin in May.

TODAY On Saturday, it will be decided who will represent Finland in Italy. The New Music competition at Turku Logomo will start at 9 pm and will be broadcast live on TV1 and Yle Areena. It is also heard on Radio Finland, YleX and Yle X3M. HS is on site watching the race.

Cyan Kicks is aiming for a place as a Eurovision Song Contest Hurricane, Bess with a song Ram pam pamThe Rasmus song JezebelYounghearted song Sun number, Tommi Läntinen with a song Life carries me, Olivera with a song Thank God I’m an Atheist and Isaac Sene with a song Hot ice.

Bessin has become the biggest Spotify hit of the songs Ram pam pam, which has been touring at or near the top of the Finnish Top 50 list since its publication. It has been listened to more than three million times before the final.

Bess is still not, for example, the pre-favorite of betting sites to win the competition. The clear winner’s favorite in betting is The Rasmus, which has made a long career and is seeking a place at Eurovision Song Contest for the first time. Lauri Ylönen The band led by Tiktak was just under the auspices of UMK Emilia “Emppu” Suhonen replaced the original member of the band Pauli Rantasalmen guitarist.

In 2021, Finland sent a rock band Blind Channel to Eurovision Song Contest Dark Side. The end result was the second best ranking in the history of Eurovision Finland: Blind Channel was the sixth in the final.

UMK final dating musician Paula Vesala and a social media influencer Miisa Rotola-Pukkila. Vesala will also appear in the show’s interim issue, as will last year’s Eurovision Song Contest Blind Channel and JVG.

The UMK winner will be chosen again this year by the joint vote of the spectators and the international jury. The weight of the points awarded by the International Jury in the final result is 25 per cent and the weight of the public votes is 75 per cent.

HS cultural editor Ilkka Mattila evaluates all UMK competition pieces in advance. Here is a summary of each song:

Cyan Kicks – Hurricane: “The hook of the chorus is the“ shut up / give up ”points shouted from above. The text pumps self-esteem high, even as “they” try to silence and discourage. It’s hard to avoid a comparison with last year’s Blind Channel winner. ”

Bess – Ram pam pam: “The unmatched contradiction is summed up in the chorus text, which in its striking rhythm is the most contagious in this year’s UMK.”

The Rasmus – Jezebel: “Lauri Ylönen and the old hit American hit artist Desmond Child have put together a song reminiscent of the band’s golden years of the early 2000s. A simple riff jerks through the song, but repetitive modulations bring tension. ”

Younghearted – Sun Number: “Among UMK’s rock songs and more electronic pulse, Younghearted’s soft and slightly folk pop sounds gentle, but also mundane contemporary radio music.”

Olivera – Thank God I’m an Atheist: “Olivera’s song is a stylish r&B ballad that doesn’t have many of the hallmarks of Finnish pop or percussion. Olivera’s voice is personal and the phrase is expressive. ”

Tommi Läntinen – Life carries me: “Life carries me is an easily rolling rock song that fits well in Western style. The theme of the song is the empowerment of a middle-aged man through life experience. ”

Isaac Sene – Hot Ice: “Sen’s song echoes the late 1980s r & b and pop, Michael Jackson and Prince. The narrator of the gay erotic story has ‘been a different woman every night’, but now an irresistible hot ice came next to him. Its song is Eurovision of the new age, bold and swinging. ”
