Elections and Quirinale, a game that is intertwined
There is a date to mark in red on the calendar: Sunday 8 May 2022 (and Monday 9). According to the rumors gathered by Affaritaliani.it in Parliament – both center-left and center-right sources -, the first weekend of May could be held early political elections. Officially all but years Giorgia Meloni they declare that they want to reach the end of the legislature, but in reality only Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Renzi they wish to avoid the polls next year.
Enrico Letta he fears the current movements in the Democratic Party and the strong risk of a congress in the autumn of 2022, so he pushes for the vote to be able to make the lists and place almost all loyalists in Parliament. Giuseppe Conte it is getting weaker in the 5 Star Movement, as evidenced by the hesitation on the candidacy for the supplementary in Rome, and, squeezed between Beppe Grillo and the governors of Luigi Di Maio, in 2023 it could reach the elections by now very weak. Matteo Salvini, despite the Governors (Massimiliano Fedriga and Luca Zaia in the lead) are pressing to reach the end of the legislature together with the minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, he certainly cannot say no to the vote when it is Meloni who invokes it.
Considering the hypothesis of the Mattarella bis for the Quirinale, to avoid early voting, there remains only the difficult, very difficult path of the candidate elected with a large majority that is not an expression of any party. The names? Giuliano Amato, Paola Severino, Marta Cartabia, Pierferdinando Casini, Gianni Letta. Numbers in hand it is almost impossible for a candidate to be biased – on the one hand Paolo Gentiloni on the other Silvio Berlusconi – manages to be elected also on the fourth ballot.
The hypothesis Mario Draghi at the Quirinale, which the Pd and M5S do not like due to the ways in which the premier has treated the parties of the majority in recent months, but it is also the only possible way to go to the elections in early May. “If Draghi is elected, he will go to the vote, absolutely sure”, underline Renzian sources. Also because it is widely believed that no other prime minister of the names that have been made – from Cartabia to Daniele Franco via Vittorio Colao – can have the political stature to hold the minister together in the same majority. Roberto Speranza, LeU, and Salvini’s League.
That is why, between the internal needs of the main parties and the knot Quirinale, many think that the main political leaders, Letta, Conte, Meloni and Salvini, are already preparing the electoral lists. Appointment, it seems, on Sunday 8 and Monday 9 May.
