Edwin Sierra is a well-known Peruvian comedian and radio host. He has been noted primarily for his work in radio, where he has been a prominent figure for many years. The man from Cusco has participated in several stations that mix humor and entertainment, and is well known in Peru for his particular style of comedy, which often includes imitations and characters created by him.
His relationship with radio began several years ago and has been consolidated over time through successful programs that have captured a wide audience. One of his most famous programs is 'Gumbias and laughter', which has been broadcast on Radio Nueva Q for 14 years and has great support from listeners.
In an interview with La República, Edwin Sierra could not hide his happiness at the rating achieved by 'Qumbias y Risas', which he hosts from Monday to Friday with Óscar del Río. The 53-year-old artist also expressed his pride in hosting famous and not-so-famous artists, and talked about the show he is preparing to celebrate the 14 years of his radio program.
—What are you passionate about radio?
—Edwin Sierra: Radio has a lot of joy and the public likes that. We are people who motivate our fans. We all have problems and we get tense about something, but you turn on the radio and forget those problems and go out to work with positivism and a good attitude.
YOU CAN SEE: Edwin Sierra: what career outside of acting did the comedian study and where?
—And the rating also favors you…
—Edwin Sierra: We have been in first place for 14 years, we beat all the programs that are in this time slot from 7 to 11 in the morning and that is a tremendous joy, knowing that the public likes what we do.
—How do you have so much energy?
—Edwin Sierra: I have a pact with God (laughs). Well, It is the talent that God gives you. And all my life I have liked doing comedy and what better than being on the radio, where I feel like a fish in water. Not only do we interview the artists, we also joke with the audience who instantly connects and lends themselves to jokes and games, and in a respectful way as well. There may be jokes, but there is a limit. That is the most important.
Edwin Sierra defends the versatility of his program
What is the key to the success of 'Qumbias yrisas'?
—Óscar del Río: We are happy to celebrate this anniversary. Working with Edwin is the best. It awakens so much energy in you that it is very contagious. We transmit this same chemistry to the public. That is the key to the success of the program.
—Do you think the radio is going to disappear?
—Óscar del Río: Quite the opposite, during the pandemic it was proven that the medium that increased the most audience was radio. And if we continue to maintain content that people like, the radio has a long life (…). The radio gives you that added bonus: content that you don't hear anywhere else.
—Edwin Sierra: What happens is that people want content and this program has interviews, jokes, contests with the public. The most important thing is that it is varied and that does not tire you.
YOU CAN SEE: Melcochita says that in Peru they do not value him as a sonero: “The radios have not broadcast my music”
—What is the nicest thing you have received from the public?
—Óscar del Río: People are very affectionate, going out into the streets and now people can recognize you is priceless to me. I owe it to the radio and social networks (…). We make people forget about problems.
—Edwin Sierra: There are many people who write to us from hospitals, they tell us that their relatives have recovered listening to the program. There are people who tell us 'my mother was very sick, she didn't want to talk to anyone, she didn't want to do anything and suddenly she turned on the radio and she started laughing'. That's nice: knowing that from a radio we can motivate so many people who have problems and who we don't know.
—Is speaking Quechua an added value of the program?
—Edwin Sierra: Sure, many radio programs do not give importance to Quechua. For example, between jokes we have our little Quechua school, little phrases are left, people already know the greeting (in Quechua), even though we are not a program that is specifically dedicated to that. And we are very happy.
—And 'Qumbias y laughter' has also become versatile
—Óscar del Río: Giving the opportunity not only to recognized cumbia artists, but also opening up to folklore and new artists.
—Edwin Sierra: Here we give the lucky kick to many artists who don't get a chance in other places, here we interview even the youngest ones.
—And your cumbiambero audience isn't jealous?
—Edwin Sierra: No, because as long as you give them good content, that audience is going to have fun. And as long as he laughs and enjoys it, he's going to have a great time.
YOU CAN SEE: Yolanda Medina assures that Alma Bella has singers, not backup singers: “I'm not sending them back”
—What does radio give you that television doesn't?
—Edwin Sierra: Radio gives me that direct connection with the public, it gives me life, because I like that. I do comedy, I do humor on the radio. And you don't need to characterize yourself, which is done on television; That's a little more work. Here in a little while you go from one character to another, from one sequence to another and basically (what counts is) the imagination of the public.
