Qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix brought back another great chapter in the direct battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton for the conquest of the world title, with the Dutch of Red Bull author of the pole position right in front of the British of Mercedes. A duel that will experience the last challenge in Sunday’s race, with Mad Max who will have the advantage not only of the start from the pole, but also of the leadership in the general classification, even if he is on equal points with the seven-time world champion.
In the meantime, however, a comment on this comparison has also come from Bernie Ecclestone; the 91-year-old Brit, head of Formula 1 before the arrival of Liberty Media, did not express a positive opinion on his compatriot from Mercedes and on the latter team, guilty of having been unsportsmanlike towards his major rival this season. Not having particularly appreciated the position taken by the British media on the eve of this weekend, clearly in favor of Hamilton, Big Bernie he expressed his thoughts on this specific aspect as follows: “Max is a kid compared to Lewis – Ecclestone analyzed – the worst part is that Lewis has a huge hype on his side. They’ve been putting pressure on Max all season, and even the referees have been watching everything very closely, as Toto Wolff is always in conversation with Michael Masi. Verstappen has to face more than just a race, because he has to face a psychological and unfair game towards him“.
Finally, Ecclestone analyzed in detail other points of this delicate wheel to wheel, noting the main differences between the two riders in his opinion: “Max has been racing for many years, but he hasn’t had years of ‘street experience’ like Lewis. This forged his character and, knowing he would win with Mercedes, being the dominant team in recent years, made him much stronger than Verstappen. For the latter, 2021 was the first time he had a car that was capable of consistently winning, while before it was not competitive at all. It’s good for the category. I think in previous years people knew in advance who was going to win. But this has been an incredible year. It was nice to have something a little different. There is nothing wrong with Lewis – he concluded – he did the best he could, but he also got a lot of help ”.
