In farofa, rice or mayonnaise, the presence of raisins in savory dishes generates controversy among families at the end of the year festivities. Despite the fruit being popular in Brazil, the vast majority of what we consume within the country comes from abroad, as our country does not meet the climatic conditions for its production and cultivation.
According to a survey by the G1, the Ministry of Health pointed out that from January to November 2021 the country purchased 20.3 million tons of the fruit, this totaled a value of US$ 28.8 million (R$ 162.8 million in the today’s exchange, 24). Of this total, more than 90% came from Argentina, as the product is exempt from tariffs, in accordance with Mercosur rules.

In addition to Argentina, in tenth place, the world’s largest producers are: Turkey, United States, Iran, Greece, Chile, South Africa, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Australia.
In an interview with G1, the researcher at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) Reginaldo Teodoro de Sousa said that it has the same nutritional benefits and properties as fresh grapes, with the difference that it undergoes a drying process.
It is the need for this process, according to Souza, that prevents the cultivation of raisins in Brazil, since drying to be done naturally requires a desert climate, which does not exist in Brazil. The process carried out in ovens, on the other hand, would consume a very large amount of electricity.
