Budget constraints have made Days Gone problematic in places.
Days Gone was a strange title, arrived at the end of the “fashion” of the zombies, quite fluctuating in its to do but still appreciated by a good slice of the public. Despite excellent sales (in theory, a mystery yet to be solved), Sony vetoed the sequel which, according to the now former director Jeff Ross, it would have been quite different.
Speaking to USA Today, has released interesting statements on the development of the title and the budget problems that have especially castrated the boss fights.
“A lot of those things, like Skizzo’s boss fight at the end, are terrible, but we had to button everything up as best we could with the systems we had. AI scripting was really difficult. With the stealth sections, we had to keep the sense of ‘they will shoot on sight’, but we didn’t necessarily want a gunfight because the player couldn’t kill them. That was the only thing I could really do, and we tried a lot of things. For the sequel, these are things I wouldn’t do again. I didn’t want to do them here. In a way I had to, but now we have the data“.
The budget problems have also affected the general trend of the title, very discontinuous in its rhythm and story:
“The footage and the VO were captured early on. We were bound by it. We couldn’t go back and repeat the shoot“, he said. “The nice thing about the story is that it’s very intertwined. And that’s what makes things impossible to cut. Like, ‘Okay, this thing with Boozer wasn’t much fun. Let’s make it as short as possible. ‘ But we needed it to connect the dots between much of the material in this story, but it couldn’t be taken out of it. It’s a blessing and a curse to have a story like that. I hate to say the Donald Rumsfeld quote ─ ‘go to war with the army you have, not the army you want’ ─ but it’s true“.
Bend Studio is now struggling with the development of another project, as confirmed by Sony itself, a further sign that Days Gone 2 will not see the light for a very long time, if its time ever comes. These statements are however interesting, making it clear how often what we play is only the result of compromise.
