Day trip An oasis of winter sports hides in the old manor environment of Espoo

In Oittaa, Espoo, you can enjoy a variety of winter sports from snowshoeing to freestyle swimming.

Where to go during tighter interest rates? HS republishes travel stories that are also suitable for day trips in the middle of winter. The original stuff has been modified to suit the turn of the year, but the tips should be adapted to the current restrictions. The new excursion destination will be published on hs.fi every morning until January 9, 2022.

Highways The Oittaan outdoor area in Espoo, located on the side, is now attracting outdoor enthusiasts. Oittaa is especially known for its ski slopes, but there are plenty of opportunities for other winter sports in the area.

The harshest frosts have eased, but there are now trails and ice rinks and two toboggan runs. You can also take a dip in the avant-garde, but the saunas are closed due to corona restrictions.

Oittaa is located at the southern end of Lake Bodomjärvi, a couple of kilometers north of the intersection of Ring Road III and Turku Fairway. Between the north and the west, the forest-dominated terrain spreads from Oitta – nature is coming close.

On Thursday, car parking spaces were tightly used, the restaurateur said Toni Loiva I’m going to the restaurant. However, according to him, vacancies could be found, as cars also left constantly.

Loiva described the atmosphere in Oitta as good.

“People are happy, the restaurateur is happy and the employees are happy.”

The frost was three degrees, so water cycling was avoided, but the tense frosts that had recently become familiar did not curb outdoor activities.

You can also get to Oitta by public transport, for example on line 246. By bus, you can prepare for the fact that the interval can be quite long, in the order of half an hour during the day and around an hour in the evening.

Espoon outdoor sports manager Petri Forsman says that two routes have been plowed on the ice of Lake Bodom. The longer one is less than nine and the shorter less than four miles.

A week ago on Monday, the city would measure ice at 20 points.

“There was more than 30 centimeters of ice everywhere, and almost all steel ice everywhere, so the ice should last.”

The ice has not been re-measured since the turn of the year, but Forsman estimates it has remained roughly unchanged.

Skating ice is described by Forsman as 90% excellent in terms of evenness.

On the outer edge of the longer skating route in the plowing snow, a trail has been made for the traditional skiing method and next to it there is also a career for skating skiers. The track is therefore almost nine kilometers long.

However, a more than five-kilometer-long trail made of cannon snow is more popular than lake trails.

Forsman points out that there has been quite a stir in the two sledding hills in Oittaan. The hills have been snowed with snow cannons, so there are better conditions for skiing than on a hill that rests on natural snow.

Ski equipment, touring skates or snowshoes can also be rented in Oitta. On Thursday, Toni Loiva estimated that there was enough snow to try on snowshoes. Extensive recreational forest areas are spread out from the rental shop, so you can also walk along the routes without snowshoes.

On the shore is also a summer identity. If Lake Bodomjärvi offers a scene for skiers and skaters in winter, it will be one of Espoo’s most popular beaches in summer.

Oitta also has an Angry Birds playground, a running trail, and a nature trail.

In Kesä-Oittaa you can rent a sup-board, canoe, rowing boat or fatbike mountain bike.
