Coronavirus | Corona infections are decreasing in the capital region, even though the forecasts estimated otherwise

Corona numbers are decreasing, because 70 percent of the Finnish population has contracted corona, says Asko Järvinen, chief infectious diseases doctor at Hus.

Corona infections have decreased significantly since early autumn. Many people have contracted the disease, which is the main reason for the epidemic to subside, says the chief infectious disease doctor of the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (Hus) Asko Järvinen.

According to Järvinen, according to THL’s sampling, 70 percent of the Finnish population has contracted the disease.

“The probability of a more severe disease is low if you have had the corona virus once.”

The only exception to this is dengue fever, which is a tropical mosquito-borne fever disease that does not occur in Finland.

According to Järvinen, there is no reason to breathe a sigh of relief, because it is a pandemic and the coronavirus still occurs significantly. However, the disease picture has changed significantly.

There are few serious intensive care patients, which is due to vaccinations and contracted omicron variant disease. In the past, those who got sick suffered from severe respiratory failure, but there are only a few such patients anymore, says Järvinen.

The infections are currently targeting people of working age, but part of the reason may be that the working-age population applies for tests because they want an infectious disease allowance.

For the vast majority, the disease is one respiratory infection among others, and special measures aimed at infections are not appropriate or usually even effective.

With vaccinations have largely achieved what was expected of them. Now the measures should primarily be targeted at the small part of the population for whom the disease can be severe. They may still need to protect themselves, and on the other hand, medical treatments are now also available for them. Testing makes sense in this target group and in symptomatic hospital patients.

Järvinen considers the home test to be a good alternative, as official tests do not lead to measures such as tracking.

“You shouldn’t do a home test on the first day of symptoms, and you should do the test again a few days later.”

Also, by using a mask, you protect yourself and others, and especially the person who is at risk of getting sick.
