Several reports indicated that the majority of governments and relevant institutions did not honor the pledges, which raises concern about the plans and efforts to be adopted by the COP27 summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.
Recognizing the fact that the world’s attention was focused on radical recommendations for climate issues last year, environmental reports released this week confirm that the climate change mitigation initiatives put forward at the COP26 summit have fallen short.
What do you check?
- Experts show that only 24 out of 200 countries have adhered to plans to reduce emissions, which is a very limited number.
- According to international reports, during last year’s summit, 15 out of 119 countries put forward realistic plans to pledge to reduce methane emissions by 30 percent from 2020 levels.
- At the level of forests, the logging operations are recording a little decrease, not up to the required level, which was decided by the Cop Twenty-six Conference, because the level of deforestation in the Amazon reached its highest level since the year two thousand and six.
- On the issue of financial pledges from rich countries to poor countries affected by climate change, the inability to provide adequate financing has undermined confidence in the COP26 summit talks and made it more difficult to make progress at the international level.
Observers attributed the reason for implementing the provisions of the previous climate summit to emergency geopolitical changes that befell the countries of the world, including the Corona crisis and the Ukraine crisis, which prompts them to place great hopes on the upcoming summit in Sharm El Sheikh, by launching more effective plans.
Limited commitment
Professor and researcher in climate affairs, Dr. Ali Qutb, confirms that the recommendations issued by the Glasgow Summit have not been implemented, in reference to the failure to commit to providing $100 billion to countries affected by climate change, in addition to reducing carbon emissions and reducing deforestation.
The researcher added in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”, that the implementation of these recommendations was affected by the political events that surprised the world this year, amid reports of a return to clinging to polluting and traditional energy sources, due to the scarcity resulting from the developments of the war between Ukraine and Russia.
He explained that the monitoring carried out by the World Meteorological Organization, through the Committee on Climate Change, shows that the emission rate continues at the same level, and the temperature continues to rise.
The Egyptian academic pointed out that several industrial countries developed plans and moved forward with clean energy projects, because they work according to plans and realize the benefits of sustainable development, while developing countries did not take the same step because they lack the required financial support.
Violent phenomena do not allow delay
The researcher expected that climate issues will be dealt with more attention at the upcoming summit, given the violent weather phenomena that were recorded during the current year, in light of the successive fires, the rise in temperature to unprecedented levels, and the drying up of rivers in Europe.
When asked about the possible formula to push the major countries to abide by their environmental commitments, the researcher said that no one can force major countries such as the United States, China and Russia to abide by, unless they sense the danger and decide to engage in confronting it on their own.
