The Plenary Session of Congress will debate and vote this Tuesday on an initiative of the PP with which it asks to extend the suspension of decree 933/2021, which has been baptized as ‘Tourist Big Brother’ for establishing new documentary registration obligations in lodging activities and rental of motor vehicles.
Although the decree issued by the Ministry of the Interior dates back to 2021, it has suffered several postponements and It is scheduled to come into force on December 2. The term ‘Big Brother’ is due to the fact that the text, in some cases, forces the hotel in question to collect sensitive information from the tourist such as their degree of relationship or their bank IBAN code.
The Popular Group points out in a non-law proposal, collected by Europa Press, that the approval and possible entry into force of the text “it poses serious inconveniences” for the tourism industry and, as it is now written, its compliance is “unviable” and represents a “great competitive disadvantage” for Spanish tourism.
Therefore, it requires reviewing and readjusting it along with the tourism subsectors most affected by the regulations, considering its lack of viability and potential negative effects for the organizational capacity and operational reality of tourism companies.
Marlaska promised to soften it
The decree has provoked protests from travel agencies, hotels and tourist accommodations due to the possible damages that may be caused by collecting more than 40 pieces of information of users as established in the legislative document.
In this scenario, the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, met with several associations in the sector and promised them that finally No more data will be required than that which is currently being collected, outside the decree.
This promise, said the minister, will be reflected in a future ministerial order that the Interior has committed to carrying out, of course, after the date of entry into force of the decree, which is December 2.
That corporate travel be excluded from the decree
Aside from the minister’s promises, the party led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo will propose to Congress that of theecret excludes corporate travel, event tourism (MICE) and groups, for which compliance “is unviable as repeatedly expressed by the most representative organizations in the sector.”
Likewise, the PP urges the Government to open a new process of dialogue with the actors of the tourism sector, including associations such as Cehat, CEAV, Acave, Fetave, UNAV or Feneval, to agree on the regulatory development through a ministerial order and achieve greater efficiency in its entry into force through its adaptation to the operational realities of the sector.
