China reiterated this Wednesday (29) its position on Taiwan, emphasizing the need to “work for national reunification” and warning that it will further intensify its military exercises around the island if “independence provocations” persist.
Zhu Fenglian, a Chinese spokesman, condemned the recent statements he classified as “independence” by Taiwan President William Lai, noting that the latest military exercises held near the island were a “direct response to these actions”, in addition to serving as “a warning” to any “external forces that attempt to support Taiwan’s independence or interfere in China’s internal affairs.”
The latest military exercises, which included the deployment of more than 62 warplanes and nearly 30 military ships, demonstrated China’s strike capabilities and were described as a “sharp punishment” for Lai’s “provocative” comments.
Fenglian stated that China “will never tolerate or give rise to activities that favor the independence” of Taiwan, and urged the island’s people to stand “on the right side of history” and oppose formal independence.
Tension between China and Taiwan, which has lasted for months, has intensified in recent days, especially after the inauguration of Lai, seen by Beijing as a defender of Taiwan’s independence.
This week, Taiwan received a delegation of American parliamentarians, who promised to speed up the sending of military aid to the island and strengthen the partnership between the country and the US.
