The Madrid Cercanías Network transported 241.7 million users in 2024, which represents an increase of 5.1% compared to 2023 and 11.7 million more, according to the balance facilitated this Saturday by Renfe.
Cercanías Madrid began in October 2024 of train units to attend the service, allowing the use of reserve units at strategic points of the network to attend with immediacy low in the operation during the operation.
Fruit of them, according to Renfe, during the last four -month period the travelers have increased by 8.6%, mobilizing a total of 86.4 million users in the October period from 2024 to January 2025, compared to 79, 5 million accounted for in the same period of the previous year.
Likewise, trains maintenance operations (Renfe Engineering and Maintenance) and on the roads (ADIF) have been reinforced to minimize the appearance of incidents during the daily service.
According to Renfe, these actions have had an immediate effect on the indicators of quality of service, as in percentages of unrealized circulations, with respect to those initially scheduled, passing these of 1.18% (October 2024) to only 0.33% ( January 2025).
It has also improved, according to the company, the regularity of the service, understood as the maintenance of the initially scheduled frequencies, resulting in January 2025 by 84.8% of the regular services compared to 80.7% registered in the same month of 2024.
New trains
The Train Park of the Cercanías Core of Madrid will be reinforced in the next year with new units of the fleet renewal plan that Renfe launched in 2019. ALSTOM TRANSPORTAD AND STADLER RAIL VALENCIA are already manufacturing 211 new trains, part of part of which will be destined for near Madrid.
These new trains will have 20% more capacity with at least 900 places each. They can be adapted according to the demand and each unit will have a minimum of six doors at soil level for people with reduced mobility.
Renfe has executed, from 2018 to 2024, a total of 805.5 million euros from the Madrid Cercanías Plan, which includes improvement actions in stations, parking, rolling material, maintenance facilities and information systems.
Special C5 Reinforcement
On the other hand, Renfe Cercanías Madrid has reinforced with 40,000 additional places the usual trains of the C5 lines of near the Móstoles stations El Soto-Atocha-Fuenlabradahumanes, within the frame and the construction of the future Green Paseo del Southwest.
It will mean the circulation of 55 additional trains per day, from 262 to 317 daily circulations in the C5, which represents a reinforcement of up to 40% compared to the service that this line had. Also, since last December 15, the C-10 has been reinforced between Las Rozas and Prince Pío.
Renfe services nearby transport more than 700,000 people daily in almost 1,300 circulations on working days. The Cercanías network consists of nine lines and two branches in almost 400 kilometers of track. The workforce is made up of more than 1,400 workers
