Capitol Hill, Trump accused: “Coup attempted”
Two and a half hours of testimonies, unpublished stories, dramatic documents. The first ‘prime-time’ hearing of the House Committee of Inquiry on January 6, 2021 laid out the guidelines of what America should expect in the coming weeks, with the other special hearings: a trial of Donald Trump and his mingling with the rioters, starting with the Proud Boysthe right-wing extremist group that played a key role in directing rioters to Capitol Hill.
“Trump – declared Liz Cheney, a Republican member isolated from his own party – not only did not condemn the assault, but he defended it. He summoned the thugs, put them together and then lit the flame of this attack.Cheney spoke of a “sophisticated seven-part plan” by the former president to reverse the election result and the course of history. The commission’s chairman, Bennie Thompson, spoke of an “attempted coup.” and warned: “The conspiracy is not over, democracy remains in danger”.
In the first part of the hearing, the commission aimed at dismantling the great Trumpian theorem of electoral fraud: from the statement by then Attorney General, William Barr, who confesses that the fraud allegations “are a str”, using the word “bullshit”. Then that of the advisers of the then president, who had told Trump himself that the elections had been fair and he had really lost. The most unexpected confirmations come from Trump’s family, starting with his daughter Ivanka, who admits in a videotaped testimony: “There was no evidence” to affirm that the vote was stolen, as she has always claimed, and still maintains, the father. In the excerpt shown tonight, Ivanka is asked what she thought of the statement by the then Attorney general, Barr, that the elections were fair. “It had an impact on my perspective – replied Ivanka – I have an esteem for Attorney General Barr, so I accepted what he claimed”.
Videos of the assault on Capitol Hill
Videos recorded during the assault on the Capitol show the role of the Proud Boys, starting with the leader, Joseph Biggs, when he approaches a person and tells them to lead the group to attack the police. In the confusion of the horde, men appear who move precisely. They are those of the Proud Boys, recently indicted for “domestic terrorism”, the most serious charge among the hundreds of people who have been on trial for months. The dramatic images, some unpublished, intersect with the testimonies of other members of the extremist group, including Enrique Tarrio, from whom we understand that the extremists of the group had been incited by Trump and his entourage.
In front of this parade of violent characters, blinded by rage, the testimonies of the English documentary maker Nick Quested finally arrived, who filmed the Proud Boys, and especially Caroline Edwards, the policewoman-heroine who was injured during the assault, the young woman who tried hard to stop the rioters. Her story ended up delivering a message of hope, as committee chairman Thompson recalled in his final thanks, for a woman who, after fainting from the assault, recovered and went to help out. Colleagues. “With her courage – Thompson told her – she has not only protected her colleagues, she has not only protected all of us, but democracy. We hope to see you again soon, completely healed, and in her uniform”.
