The Spanish Jon Rahm started his defense of the Masters title this Thursday with a round of ups and downs. He shot 73 shots, one over par, and was eight shots behind the leader, the American Bryson DeChambeau (-7).
Rahm played in the afternoon, then heavy rain forced the start of the tournament to be postponed for about two hours. The delay prevented the first day from being completed, which will end this Friday.
The current champion and spearhead of LIV Golf in this tournament signed four birdies for five bogeys. Three of his errors came in the last five holes played, including two in a row on the 17th and 18th holes.
Rahm had started with a birdie on three and was -1 at the end of the first nine holes. He will be forced to come back in the next three rounds of the Augusta Masters.
The Masters leaders
Leader Bryson DeChambeau signed a seven under par and Scottie Scheffler, champion in 2022 and the main candidate for the title among the players who remain on the PGA Tour, achieved a six under par without any error.
The Colombian also had a complicated round Camilo Villegas, on his return to Augusta National after nine years. He turned in a 74, two over par.
The Antioquian was four strokes above par in the first five holes, starting with two bogeys and then a double bogey on 5. But then he closed the first nine with +2, thanks to birdies on 6 and The 9.
In the second half of the course, Villegas scored two birdies, at 10 and 13, and two bogeys, at 12 and 18.
