Reuters: Truss office says Russia has no moral right to participate in G20
British Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister candidate Liz Truss has changed her mind about Russia’s participation in the G20 summit to be held in November in Indonesia. This is reported Reuters.
Russia has no moral right to sit in the G20 as long as its aggression in Ukraine continues
Contradictory statements
It is noteworthy that Truss previously announced her readiness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin within the framework of the G20 if she receives the post of prime minister of the kingdom and head of the Conservative Party.
In addition, she made similar statements before. In particular, during the July 18 debate, the diplomat promised that if she was elected prime minister, she would meet with the Russian leader at the G20 summit in Bali. “I was ready to besiege (Russian Foreign Minister) Sergei Lavrov. And I am ready to speak directly to Putin and invite him to a conversation with the participation of such large countries as India and Indonesia. Thus, I will go there and call him for a conversation,” the diplomat said.

The demand not to let Russia into the summit sounds not for the first time
Earlier, the candidate for prime minister and former head of the British Treasury, Rishi Sunak, called for the Russian leader not to be allowed to the G20 summit. According to him, the G20 countries that support Ukraine “have a collective responsibility for calling Putin’s behavior appalling.” In turn, the head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Leonid Slutsky, called this proposal a useless appeal, which is designed to gain points in the internal political and internal party struggle.
In March, US President Joe Biden called for Russia’s exclusion from the G20. He stated that the American side would support this, even though there was no support for such a decision from all members of the organization. As observers from The Washington Post noted, the decision to invite Vladimir Putin to the fall G20 summit runs counter to the US campaign to turn Moscow into a rogue state and puts the head of the White House in an awkward position.

Call to boycott Russia not supported by everyone
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he was not yet ready to refuse to participate in the G20 summit in November if the Russian leader was present there. At the same time, he added that he would make the final decision on participation only “shortly before departure”, depending on the situation in the world that had developed by that time.
In addition, Scholz urged other states not to boycott the event because of this. A similar call was also made by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. She stressed that the G20 is too important to be paralyzed by a boycott. At the same time, she noted that it would no longer be possible to conduct business with Russia as usual.
It is important to personally tell Putin what we think of him and how we regard such actions.
Russia’s participation in the G20 meeting was also supported by Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Alberto Franco Frans. According to him, the exclusion of Russia will not help to find a solution to “the pressing problem that we are facing now.”
Plans to participate in the G20
The fact that Vladimir Putin intends to attend the summit was previously announced by Indonesian President Joko Widodo. According to him, the Russian leader personally announced plans to come to Bali. In addition, Chinese President Xi Jinping will also attend the G20 summit, Widodo added.

At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that the format of the president’s participation in the G20 has not yet been determined. “There is still no decision on Indonesia yet. There is still time. We are working in the G20 format and will continue to work,” he said.
The autumn G20 summit is to be held on November 15-16 in Bali. Moscow had previously notified Jakarta of Putin’s intention to take part in the event. In addition to the Russian leader, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky received an invitation to participate.
