The board of trustees of the Unicaja Banking Foundation has accepted the resignation of Braulio Medel as trustee and president and has unanimously agreed on the appointment of José Manuel Domínguez Martínez as trustee and president of the institution.
As reported in a statement, the board of trustees has also agreed to ask the Protectorate of Banking Foundations, dependent on the Ministry of Economic Affairs, that the report it required rule only on the governance of the Foundation and not on the suitability of Braulio Medel as president. , having ceased in his position.
Thus, the relief of Medel has become effective, who on April 14 announced that he would resign from the presidency of the Foundation before the expiration of his mandate in the autumn.
So, Medel attributed his decision to several reasons, such as the report sent from the Protectorate of Banking Foundations, dependent on the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, which questioned his suitability for the position, the existence of “endless external pressures and persistent hostile media campaigns” and the “imperative attention” to other personal and family duties.
A few weeks later, the Unicaja Banking Foundation proposed José Manuel Domínguez Martínez as president, who since 1990 and until very recently has held various senior management positions at Caja de Ronda, Unicaja and Unicaja Banco. Domínguez Martínez has a doctorate in Economic Sciences and is Professor of Public Finance at the University of Malaga and, since its creation in 2005, has directed the Edufinet Financial Education Project.
At the board meeting held this Tuesday, Domínguez took office and expressed his gratitude for the appointment and for all the support received, “both internally and externally.”
The new president of the Foundation has highlighted that he assumes the position “under the premise of being able to exercise it with autonomy and independence, without other constraints than those derived from the legal, institutional and corporate framework and from the strictest defense of the interests of the Foundation.
