In an emotional speech on Paulista Avenue on September 7, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) recalled the stabbing he suffered in 2018 and once again stated that his first election was the result of a failure in the electoral system. Bolsonaro attacked Minister Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of conducting the 2022 elections in a biased manner and choosing his targets.
To prevent me from having a chance to return, they declared me ineligible. One of the reasons was because I met with ambassadors. I did not meet with drug traffickers in Morro do Alemão, as Lula did. These investigations, which led to others based on the aforementioned petitions, gave Alexandre de Moraes broad powers, who chose his targets, including my son Eduardo Bolsonaro. This was confirmed in the audios leaked in the operation known as Lava Toga, Bolsonaro said in a speech.
The former president called the January 8 coup a setup and asked for amnesty for those arrested. “God wanted me to leave the country on January 30. Something was going to happen. I had this feeling, but I didn’t know it would be like that,” said Bolsonaro, who continued. “That was never a coup d’état and we are still seeing people being tried and convicted as members of an armed group that aimed to change our democratic rule of law. And I feel sorry for those people who are arrested,” said the former president, asking for amnesty for those arrested.
The statement was made during a pro-Bolsonaro rally on Avenida Paulista this Saturday, September 7. Organized by pastor Silas Malafaia, the demonstration has as one of its main themes the request for impeachment of the minister of the Supreme Federal Court, Alexandre de Moraes.
In addition to the former president and Malafaia himself, several other Bolsonaro supporters were present at the event, including the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), senators Marcos Pontes (PL), Magno Malta (PL-ES), Cleitinho (Republicans-MG), Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO), Marcos Rogério (PL-RO), and federal deputies Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), Zé Trovão (PL-SC) and Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ). The mayor of São Paulo and candidate for reelection, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), also participated in the event.
Before Jair Bolsonaro gave his speech on Avenida Paulista, his allies made inflammatory speeches against Minister Alexandre de Moraes and the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco.
Eduardo Bolsonaro opened his speeches by calling for an end to the imprisonment of allies for anti-democratic acts, amnesty for those arrested for the coup acts of January 8, and the closure of the investigations into fake news and digital militias in the Supreme Court. Federal deputy Julia Zanatta (PL-SC) called Pacheco a coward and criticized political arrests. Nikolas Ferreira (PL), also a deputy, referred to the STF minister as a tyrant and criminal, while governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) limited himself to asking for amnesty for those arrested on January 8.
The demonstration included improvised posters calling for the Supreme Court to be removed, shirts with images of the imprisoned minister, and requests for amnesty for those arrested for the coup d’état on January 8, when the buildings of the three branches of government were invaded and destroyed. There were also requests for printed ballots.
