Argentine government says that joint operation responds to a request from the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite
The government of Argentina published this Monday (May 13, 2024) a resolution authorizing a joint civil protection operation “with the aim of providing humanitarian assistance in the State of Rio Grande do Sul”. According to the document (completein Spanish – PDF – 169 kB), the measure responds to a request from the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB).
The Argentine government authorized the White Helmets (an Argentine government body in charge of designing and implementing international humanitarian assistance), collaborate with Rio Grande do Sul.”in rescuing people, logistics and shelter management”.
The floods in Rio Grande do Sul have already left 145 people dead. According to the State Civil Defense bulletin, released on Sunday night (May 12), there are 538,743 homeless, 132 missing and 806 injured. In total, 2.1 million people and 447 municipalities were affected. The State still has 81,200 people in shelters.
According to the Argentine government’s resolution, the operational commander of the country’s Armed Forces “established formal contact with the commander of the Southern Command of the Brazilian Army, Army General Hertz Pires do Nascimento”. The Brazilian military “formalized the initial type of help to satisfy”.
The document authorizes the departure of military personnel from Argentine territory “in order to provide humanitarian assistance” in Rio Grande do Sul.”The Chiefs of the General Staff of the Forces will be instructed to recruit and make available the personnel and resources necessary to carry out the operation”, reads the resolution.
