Despite not having a public release date yet, the feature already raises ethical questions
Amazon has announced that it is developing a voice feature for Alexa, its virtual assistant. The robot will be able to imitate the voice of living or dead people.
The news was announced by Alexa Chief Scientist Rohit Prasad at the conference. re:MARS 2022 from Amazon, on Wednesday (June 22, 2022). In the demo, he displayed a video of a boy asking the virtual assistant to read “The Wizard of Oz” in her grandmother’s voice. The command was answered by Alexa.
“although the AI [inteligência artificial] cannot eliminate the pain of loss, it can definitely make the memories last.”, said Prasad.
According to the scientist, Alexa learns to imitate a voice after listening to a recording of less than 1 minute.
The Amazon employee said he believes that, soon, artificial intelligence will be fully embedded in people’s daily lives. “We are unquestionably living in the golden age of AI, where our dreams and science fiction are coming true.”
The new feature is raising ethical questions. Recently, the producers of the documentary “roadrunner”, about Anthony Bourdain, were criticized for using a digital replica of the chef’s voice killed in June 2018 in parts of the film.
Amazon did not say when the new feature will launch.
The re:MARS 2022 conference is being held from Tuesday (June 21) to this Friday (June 22), in Las Vegas, United States.
