The Brazilian, leader of the 2022 season, has just won the eighth stop of the Diamond League and wants to ratify the good moment he is experiencing at the Oregon World Cup. Barely 22 years old, the man from São Paulo goes to Eugene to write his own story.
Alison Dos Santos made the transition from a tatami to the track like someone passing one of the 10 hurdles that there are in the event that is going to take place at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene.
The native of São Paulo practiced judo until he was 16 years old and at 18 he was competing in his first adult World Cup in Doha, where he finished seventh.
His history on the track has been as fast as the 46.72 he set at the Tokyo National Stadium. That time is the best in South America in the history of the 400 meter hurdles and earned him to become an Olympic bronze medalist.
In Eugene 2022, he will seek to ratify his status as leader of the season. His last result was the gold medal in stage number eight of the Diamond League, where he won with a record of 46.81.
“I am very anxious at this World Cup, to start my test, the preparation was very good, I am very prepared for this world competition, we want to be on the track to make history quickly and leave here with a conquest, with the first medal in South America in that test, and inspire more people to conquer their goals too,” Dos Santos tells France 24.
The Norwegian Karsten Warholm, the main threat
The unknown state of health of the world record holder, the Norwegian Karsten Warholm, has opened up a range of possibilities for Dos Santos.
The Tokyo 2020 champion and owner of the best record in history in the 400 hurdles (45.94) was injured last June during the fourth stop of the Diamond League in Rabat. However, the Brazilian Dos Santos does not think about this: today his goal is to ratify the good work he has been doing.
“This season has given me a lot of confidence, I have been very persistent in the results, I am running very fast, doing things like in training and now for this competition I feel very confident, happy, and I think that with all this baggage I am very prepared to run faster”, says the athlete.
There is a little over a year left to open the Olympic qualification for Paris and the Brazilian is aware that this cycle forces him to work much faster. The possibility of a second Olympic medal constantly haunts his mind.
“This is a very short cycle, in which season after season is happening, first I am thinking about this year and then I focus on Paris, thinking about what we have now. This cycle is short and we are going to make it worthwhile”, explains the Brazilian.
