Start-ups and large companies that focus on eVtol and more generally on the concept of air taxi, a form of future mobility that could free part of the traffic from big cities by exploiting the skies, are at the first fundamental showdown. Some of these companies will attempt the assault on Wall Street, trying to raise funds to get close to the first objectives: to standardize vehicles, to transport goods and people, to become technologically more accessible.
“The list of electric flight start-ups is getting longer e the latest ready to land on Wall Street is by Brazilian producer Embraer. President and CEO Francisco Gomes Neto has formalized the separation of the aero-taxi division, Eve Urban Air Mobility, with the aim of listing it on the New York Stock Exchange through the Spac (Special-purpose acquisition) Zanite Acquisition Corp. by half of 2022, after the approval of the merger by the shareholders. The transaction values Eve 2.4 billion dollars, about half the value of Embraer whose enterprise value is about 4.9 billion dollars. Eve already has “non-binding” orders for 1,750 aircraft from 17 operators for a value of 5.2 billion dollars. After the merger with Zanite, Eve will have cash available for 512 million dollars“, We read in the Sole 24 Ore.
The biggest problem? Aviation laws. The American Federal Aviation Administration, eg, will have the task of evaluating and approving electric vertical take-off aircraft and this does not necessarily happen quickly. This is because, perhaps with good reason, we are not yet ready to see these vehicles fly over our heads, when we still do not know how to perfectly manage the vehicles that put their wheels on the ground. Furthermore, there is a lack of infrastructures: where will these vehicles be able to land, without ad hoc spaces?
These doubts are reflected in the results of other start-ups. In fact, after the listing of Archer Aviation, 48.5% of the shareholders requested the redemption of the shares. Even worse went to Lilium and Joby (65%), while Volocopter has postponed the listing assuming similar risks. Instead, it could do better, in the short to medium term, for large aviation companies that are testing electric planes. Rolls-Royce, for example, tested the aircraft last September Spirit of Innovation. But we must not forget the biofuels, which could contribute in the meantime to the reduction of emissions.
