It was originally conceived by the founder of the Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, to develop in soldiers, and particularly knights, the skills necessary to survive behind enemy lines. But now the modern pentathlon could change, replacing horses with bikes. After 109 years from its birth, the world governing body of this discipline – according to the website of the newspaper The Guardian – has voted to eliminate horse riding and replace it with cycling, without yet officially communicating it.
The decision was allegedly made in recent days by the board of directors of the International Union of Modern Pentathlon (Uipm). To bring about this turning point also the scenes shot by the cameras at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, when the German trainer Kim Raisner (later disqualified) had hit the horse that was disobeying the orders of Annika Schleu, one of the favorites, with her fists. and making the dream of a medal fade. In addition to running, shooting, swimming and fencing, horse riding is also included in the modern pentathlon: however, the horse is unknown and is assigned to the athletes just twenty minutes before the race, sometimes too little to familiarize with.
The Uipm has for the moment only declared that «to maintain a strong and dynamic profile for the modern pentathlon, a series of strategic meetings are taking place. These meetings will include an upcoming call with national federations later this week. The outcome of these meetings will be detailed in a press release that will be published on November 4th ».
