It started, as so often, on TikTok. On September 19, 23-year-old model Sumner Stroh a video on the social network in which she claims to have had an affair with Adam Levine, frontman of the pop group Maroon 5. After two months of no contact, he would send Stroh via a DM (direct message) wanted to propose something: His wife was pregnant and Levine asked Stroh if he could name his child after her, Sumner. Stroh says someone else wanted to leak screenshots of those messages and that’s why she’s coming out with her story.
The video has been viewed almost 24 million times after a few days. Levine felt compelled to respond. In a story on Instagram, he partly donned the robes: he denied having cheated, but admitted that he had contact with women in a flirtatious way. “I crossed the border during a regrettable period in my life.”
The post was no doubt meant to take the sting out of the case, but a meme had already been born. Several women shared the horny DMs that the 43-year-old singer would have sent. The messages the women shared were all very uncomfortable. This pop star can’t believe the messages he sends how hot the women he interacts with are. „Holy fucking fuckhe reportedly typed. “That body of yours is absurd.” And, referring to someone’s behind:I may need to see the booty.” as if he a pirate would be who wants to see a treasure. „Fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk”, he wrote at the end, to emphasize that he was impressed.
The fun for many in this matter is also in the confirmation of the reputation that Maroon 5 has. The group is undeniably popular: on Spotify alone, about 50 million people listen to songs like ‘Moves Like Jagger’ and ‘Memories’ every month. But for music lovers, Maroon 5 might be just that little bit cooler than Nickelback, one of the most mocked bands in the world. The jokes are therefore almost too easy. Journalist Joe Bernstein touches on that point on Twitter: “Adam Levine’s sexual messages are the Maroon 5 among sexual messages.”
Kermit
After almost a week, the internet seems far from done with the matter and fictitious messages are also being made, including about the flirty DM behavior of Kermit the Frog. He’s a little sweeter, though. The Twitter account of the OBA (Amsterdam Public Library) also participated, by linking one of the flirt messages (“It’s unreal how hot you are.”) to a visit to the library. This is what you say when you walk into the OBA, that idea.
The Maroon 5 guy isn’t the first celebrity to go down with DMs and he won’t be the last. The risk is great, before you know it the messages are on the street and you are the head of jut. Soon after the memes, other discussions arose as well. Stroh received a lot of hatred after her video because she would falsely present herself as a victim. Model Emily Ratajkowski came to TikTok with her own analysis. “I don’t understand why we keep blaming women for men’s mistakes, especially when it comes to women who have to deal with men in positions of power who are twice their age.” Her conclusion: “That is classic misogyny. Point.”
