The Lorca Association for its Cultural Heritage has called a rally on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. in the old collegiate church of San Patricio to protest the demolition of the staircase leading to the main entrance of the church last week.
On its social networks, the association assures that “Lorca's heritage has been systematically destroyed for decades” and that “the latest” has been the stairs of the second most important temple in the Region “as it is not protected.”
According to the association, “the majority of our heritage is not protected, so it will disappear unless we demand its conservation, which is that of the ancient people of Lorca, the present and the future. “Today was Saint Patrick's Day, tomorrow it will be something worse.”
Lorca, for its Cultural Heritage, wants “politicians to understand that we do not want them to destroy our heritage, which is our identity, our history.” Furthermore, “it is a constitutional right and a legal imperative for administrations to conserve and promote our heritage.”
Last Wednesday, the City Council demolished the access staircase to the atrium of the main façade of San Patricio to put an end to the narrowing of the road and the danger to pedestrians, justified the Councilor for Urban Planning, María Hernández.
He explained that the last renovation to which this entrance to the church was subjected in 1996 eliminated the staircase inside the atrium and placed it outside. So that it invaded the smallest possible portion of the public road, it was built “somewhat forcefully,” he argued. He added that “the shallow depth of the steps, the excessive slope and the absence of handrails make it almost impracticable for use.”
The PSOE demanded on Friday the opening of a commission of investigation into the demolition of the staircase to clarify all the details. Although the City Council published on the transparency portal the authorization of the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage to carry out this action, the PSOE stated that the demolition lacked the archaeological supervision report.
