Temporary WhatsApp messages are one of these functions and specifically allow messages to disappear from chats after a set period of timewhich is very useful for maintaining privacy and freeing up storage space. However, if you no longer need this featureyou can easily disable it. These are the steps to follow to do it in different situations.
Turn off temporary messages for new chats
If you want to turn off temporary messages for all new individual chats, follow these steps:
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on Privacy.
- Select Default duration.
- Choose Off.
From now on, any new one-on-one chats you start will not have the temporary messages feature enabled.
Turn off temporary messages in an existing chat or group
If you already have an individual chat with temporary messages activated and you want to deactivate them, follow these steps:
- Open the chat on WhatsApp.
- Tap the contact or group name at the top of the screen.
- Select Temporary messages.
- Choose Off.
Temporary messages will no longer be active in this chat or group. Please note that messages previously sent with the feature activated will continue to disappear after the set time.
Before applying these changes you must take into account the following
- Cannot recover temporary messages: Once a temporary message disappears, it cannot be recovered. Be sure to save any important information before it is deleted.
- Temporary messages do not affect messages sent before activation: The feature only applies to messages sent after you activate it.
- Backups may contain temporary messages: If you made a backup before a temporary message disappeared, the message may still be present in the backup.
- If you need to delete messages permanently but don’t want to or can’t use the temporary messages feature, delete messages manually.
