Deputy Didenko: Google, Android and iOS may be blocked in Russia
State Duma deputy from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia Alexey Didenko said that Google, Android and iOS will soon be blocked in Russia. He told this to the RuNews24 portal.
This will not happen on our initiative. Civil servants and officials have long been prohibited from using these platforms, especially those with access to confidential information. This was the first hint that you need to move to other platforms
The deputy has already advised business representatives and scientists to switch to other platforms.
He also noted that he does not see anything tragic in this initiative. Didenko cited the blocking of access to the Netflix platform as an example – the streaming platform decided to suspend operations in Russia in March 2022. According to him, many Russians expressed their dissatisfaction at the time, but everyone calmed down later. “It’s just that now we are faced with restrictions, and we will also be forced to introduce them. This is obvious,” he explained.
Mizulina responded to Didenko’s words
After the publication of the material on the deputy’s words about blocking popular platforms in Russia, Telegram-channel responded the head of the League for Safe Internet Ekaterina Mizulina.
This is a bit too much. What to use if most Russians have Android smartphones?
Later, in a conversation with other media, Didenko explainedthat his words are just an assumption. “I can’t know any solution, but there is such a prospect (…). That is, there is no need to even pass any law. If they violate it, they will receive certain sanctions,” the deputy explained, noting that “the prospect is obvious.”
In addition, Didenko indicatedthat most likely, American companies “will not stop at slowing down” the YouTube platform and will start using all the platforms available to them. “That’s why the time will come for iOS, because they can go very far in their frenzy,” Didenko noted.
Earlier, YouTube was slowed down in Russia
Last week, the head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications, Alexander Khinshtein, said that YouTube would be slowed down in Russia. He later explained his words, pointing out that the American video hosting company cannot pay for the services of Russian data centers.
According to him, YouTube’s download speed has recently dropped to 40 percent. At the same time, according to the deputy’s forecasts, by the end of this week it may drop to 70 percent. “And this is primarily due to the actions (or rather inaction) of YouTube itself,” the deputy explained.

Khinshtein emphasized that the bulk of the platform’s video content is stored on Google servers in the Russian Federation, located on the infrastructure of telecom operators and in a number of large data centers. And since Google supported the sanctions and bankrupted its division in the country, the corporation cannot officially pay for the services of data centers in Russia, the deputy emphasized.
The day before, on August 1, Russians reported massive disruptions in YouTube. The video hosting service’s irregular operation began at about 1:00 Moscow time. Most complaints came from Moscow. Google responded that the disruptions in YouTube were not related to technical problems on the company’s side.
