The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, once again reinforced this Wednesday, the 19th, that there is no interference from the Lula government in the governance of Petrobras. In a hearing at the Mines and Energy Committee in the Chamber, he declared that the defense of the government’s agenda is directed to the company’s Board of Directors, with representatives from the Union.
“I didn’t want to and don’t want to appoint even a cleaner in the governance (of Petrobras). Not a manager, director, or president, exactly so that the Minister of State has his independence to be able to supervise the management of the company”, said Silveira.
In public speeches, the minister has repeatedly argued that it is Petrobras’ duty to maintain its attractiveness for national and foreign investors, aligning the company’s “strategic” actions in the fuel production chain.
At the end of May, Silveira mentioned that the new president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, took charge knowing the company’s investment agenda. The plan for the period from 2024 to 2028 has forecast investments of around US$102 billion.
Equatorial Margin
At the same hearing this Wednesday, the Minister of Mines and Energy once again asked for speed in the Ibama licensing process for oil exploration in deep waters in the Equatorial Margin, specifically the drilling of the FZA-M-59 block, around 500 meters away. km from the mouth of the Amazon River.
The general coordinator of climate change at the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), Thiago Longo, has already said that a decision by Ibama should not happen before the 2025 United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), scheduled for November 2025, in Belém.
“We have to move forward and have a diagnosis (about exploration in the Equatorial Margin)”, he assessed. “Oil is still a fundamental energy source, in Brazil in particular,” she added.
The minister also mentioned again that Petrobras “must always” be attractive to national and international investors, as well as having “independent and transparent governance”.
In another public speech, last week, Silveira declared that the government is “aware” that resources from investors “give breath” to the company and enable investments defended by the Executive.
At this Wednesday morning’s hearing, he declared that Brazilians “have already paid”, through subsidies embedded in the electricity bill, for the country’s leading role in the energy transition. Now the effort, according to him, would be “to equalize as much as possible to have a fair tariff in Brazil”.
