A woman gave birth to a baby this morning around 7:30 a.m. while she was on a bus of the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Valencia, in an emergency birth that had the help of the father and the collaboration of some passengers, in addition to the driver, as reported by City Council sources. As soon as he was notified by a passenger of the situation, the bus driver, Antonio Rodríguez, 53, deviated from his usual route and went directly to the Clinical Hospital as quickly as possible. “I have not given any option and people have understood it very well,” the driver told this newspaper. When he stopped the bus next to the Emergency Room entrance, the child had already been born on board. The baby and the mother are in good condition and have received medical attention from the paramedics, who immediately went out into the street alerted by the incessant honking of the bus.
The events occurred early this Thursday morning. A couple has boarded a bus at the second stop of EMT Valencia line 93, which links the city’s Paseo Marítimo with Avenida del Cid, crossing the entire city. She seemed restless, with signs of not feeling very well, of suffering some pain, but nothing that seemed serious, the driver said. However, “four stops in”, when the bus passed the roundabout at the beginning of Tarongers Avenue, she went into labour. A very nervous passenger went to the driver to inform him that the woman’s water had broken.
Antonio, 53 years old and with 23 years of experience in the EMT, then stopped the vehicle and confirmed that the birth was imminent to the point that he saw “the baby and the umbilical cord that surrounded his neck and that they had “I had to move away.” “So I’ve told people not to call for stops because I’m going offline straight to the hospital.” The bus has made its way through the traffic, honking incessantly and passing the “amber” traffic lights. “Before arriving at the Clinic, I have already heard the baby crying and people shouting ‘he has already been born’, ‘he has already been born’. When I left them with the health personnel, on the stretcher, and with people applauding as if there had been a party, and I told them ‘everyone p’up again’ and I have joined the route. I have not given a choice either,” he explained a few hours later.
Everything has happened very quickly. In just five minutes the child was born, assisted by the father and the passenger who had been more attentive and had shown more initiative, while the rest tried to lend a hand without really knowing what to do. The passenger was made up of around thirty people, “90% of them are people who are going to work,” the driver added. The couple is foreign and barely spoke Spanish, added Antonio, a resident of the town of Torrent and father of three children. “They could be Pakistani or Indian based on their appearance and clothing. In the end, the father patted me on the shoulder and thanked me,” commented the driver, who starts his workday at five-twenty in the morning.
It is the second birth on board a Valencia EMT bus, after the one that occurred in 2012, which also had an uneventful outcome, but at the La Fe Hospital. Sources from the municipal company have taken advantage of the happy event to remember that The Consell Jurídic Consultiu de la Comunitat Valenciana, the judicial advisory body of the Generalitat, has ruled that the drivers and inspectors of EMT València hold the status of “agents of the authority.” A recognized category in the exercise of its functions of control and inspection of the passage for the proper use of transportation tickets.
