The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) activated this Monday the eighth ozone contingency of the year in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico.
The CAMe reported that, at 3:00 p.m., maximum ozone concentrations were recorded at the UAM Iztapalapa (UIZ) monitoring station, located in the Mayor’s Office of Iztapalapa, Mexico City, reaching 156 ppb.
This increase in ozone levels is due to the presence of a high pressure system in the center of the country, associated with an air mass with light to moderate humidity content, and stable atmospheric conditions, which has caused the stagnation of the precursor pollutants of ozone and its formation, enhanced by high solar radiation and weak surface winds.
Given this situation, CAMe has activated Phase 1 of the Ozone Environmental Contingency, in compliance with the Programs to Prevent and Respond to Atmospheric Environmental Contingencies of Mexico City and the State of Mexico, which govern the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico.
The main objective is to reduce the population’s exposure to contaminated air and prevent possible health effects.
Among the measures implemented during this phase are the restriction of vehicular circulation, the reduction of industrial and commercial activity, and the suspension of outdoor activities in schools and recreational centers.
THE CAMr urges the population to avoid the use of private vehicles and opt for public transportation or alternative means of mobility.
