On the Saturday of the MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix, a press conference was called to announce a new championship sanctioned by the FIM. This is the Interncontinental Games, an event that will be held every two years and the first will take place in Jerez in November this year.
The first year of the Games includes competitions only on the track, but future plans include the idea of adding off-road competitions as well. The event is sponsored by Yamaha, Airoh helmets and Spidi suits will be available. Although Jorge Viegas, President of the FIM, wants the participation of MotoGP and World Superbike stars, sponsor issues could prevent many riders from taking part in the event.
The bikes used for this first event will be the Yamaha R3 and R7, which will be fitted with Dunlop tyres. The teams will be country-based and will consist of four drivers, including one woman among them. Each team will have a captain, who should come from a world championship, while the other drivers come from national series.
The first event will be held in Jerez at the end of November and the format of the weekend has already been announced: free practice on Friday, qualifying on Saturday and two races for each motorcycle class on Sunday.

“This is a project that I have been cultivating for more than 20 years,” explained FIM President Jorge Viegas. “One day in the FIM, when we created the continental unions, we thought it would be very useful to create a competition between these continental unions. This doesn't exist anywhere else, so for the first time we will see drivers with European, African, Asian, Oceania, North and South American colours.”
The broadcast of the event will be managed by Dorna Sports, promoter of MotoGP and World Superbike, and will be distributed live via Warner Brothers Discovery and Eurosport.
The event's overall winner's prize will go to the best team of the four races contested, but the FIM says there will also be individual prizes for best rider and best female.
