The process of electrification of the Honda range is about to come to life. The Japanese car manufacturer is preparing to introduce the new 0 Series line onto the market, a series of fully electric models making their debut is expected in 2026 with the production version of the Saloon concept: it will be followed by an SUV closely related to the latter, and in the future it will also include the battery-powered successors of models such as Jazz and Civic.
Electric accessible
At the moment Honda has not provided exact timing regarding the expansion of its electric range, but company executives have confirmed that the entry-level models they will eventually become part of the lineup. “To increase volumes, we need more affordable electric vehicles“admitted Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe.
Battery chemistry
As highlighted by Autocar, the work to reduce the cost and weight of the batteries of its electric vehicles will undoubtedly be done crucial at Honda for the purpose of creating small and economical electric vehicles. Reducing the size of the batteries is not necessarily the solution, on the contrary: Honda's number one is convinced that we need to work more on technology of the latter rather than on their size, which means that it is reasonable to expect a different chemical composition for the batteries of the brand's future electric cars.
Deal with GM fell through
In this sense we remember the interruption of the partnership between Honda and General Motorsa decision that the Japanese brand took because the challenge would have been very great anyway. “Even if we had pursued this development together, it would have been a daunting challenge to bring an affordable electric vehicle to market on a large scale – commented Mibe – This is why we decided to work on the accessible electric vehicle ourselves. Honda has alternative strategies to achieve this goal”.
