Son of the US president is accused of contempt for refusing to testify about his father's impeachment; goes to plenary
The Judiciary and Oversight committees of the United States House approved this Wednesday (January 10, 2024) a report that calls for Hunter Biden to be held accountable for contempt of Congress. President Joe Biden's son refused to give a statement seeking information for the investigation into impeachment of the American president.
The decision of both committees recommended that the full House refer Hunter's case to the Department of Justice. However, there is still no date for the analysis to be carried out by congressmen. The information is from the newspaper The Washington Post.
The vote that classifies Hunter Biden's actions as criminal contempt is one of three ways that the US Congress has to enforce its subpoenas. Any citizen found responsible for contempt of Congress may face a fine and imprisonment of between 1 and 12 months in the USA.
The votes were marked by a brief appearance by Hunter, which was criticized by members of the Republican party. The president's son walked through the halls of the Capitol and sat next to his lawyers. His visit to the polls took place the day before he faced charges of tax evasion.
UNDERSTAND THE CASE
Hunter's statement seeks information about his father, President Joe Biden. The Democrat is accused of influence peddling by Republicans.
The American president allegedly influenced his son's business relations with a natural gas producing company based in Ukraine.
Republicans are also investigating a $200,000 check made by the president to his brother, James Biden, in 2018, which was refunded a few months later.
