The last DTM event officially concluded the first season of international competition for Lamborghini Squadra Corse with the brand new Huracán GT3 EVO2.
The car, presented to the public only a year ago on the occasion of the Grand Finals, made its debut at Daytona last January, in a difficult 24h due to the Balance of Performance still not adequately established for this model, which then participated in other competitions such as GT World Challenge, 24h of Nürburgring, DTM, GT Open and so on.
It was precisely in the German series that the first success came in the debut at Oschersleben, a sign that the vehicle could be competitive, despite suffering from a few too many problems in the GTWC Endurance Cup races.
To take stock, Motorsport.com – together with other journalists – met Rouven Mohr, Chief Technical Officer of Lamborghini Squadra Corse, and the Head of Motorsport, Giorgio Sanna, who summed up this first year where the Huracán GT3 EVO2 he came close to the DTM title with Mirko Bortolotti.

Despite some problems, the Huracán GT3 EVO2 proved to be a beautiful car, are you happy?
RM: “The potential was there and we were competitive in all the championships we took part in. At the beginning we suffered from some problems, especially with the BoP, which can happen when new models arrive because we tend to base the parameters on the old ones. Others have also suffered, besides us, but I think it’s part of the game. Unfortunately at Daytona we didn’t have the opportunity to fight at the same level with our rivals, but in general the season saw us competitive, so I can say that we are happy.”
What was the main problem with this car?
RM: “More than a problem, it was a matter of facing some challenges, both for us and for the technicians who had to determine the BoP. The engine with the new air intake, the single restrictor and the double actuator presented everyone with something new which took time to better understand and evaluate with the right BoP parameters, such as restrictor size.”
What immediately satisfied you?
RM: “The car has always been there in terms of cornering speed, braking efficiency and general performance, at Daytona it lacked top speed and torque delivery, but they were linked to what was said before.”

Have you thought about any developments for next year?
RM: “In 2024 we will start with the foundations laid this year, we are evaluating what potential improvements could be made taking into account homologation and permitted evolutions. Certainly at the beginning of the season there were problems with the brakes and some difficulties with handling. But they are all conversations we will have between now and December.”
Are you happy with the new teams that took part in the GT series with Lamborghini?
RM: “I honestly think that everyone exceeded expectations. Usually, when you start with a new team, you first have to get to know the car and how the parts work well. There are some initial difficulties, but SSR Performance has managed to win immediately in the DTM and Iron Lynx got on the podium, with the difficulty of working in parallel on the LMDh. So there is certainly satisfaction with what has been done.”
Regarding future commitments, are you thinking of bringing one of the teams with official support to the 24h of Nurburgring?
RM: “It is our intention to be there, but at the moment it is too early to talk about a dedicated team or program. We are working on it and we will announce it in due time, certainly the fact that we were there in 2023, with competitive performances, but slowed down by unfortunate episodes such as punctures and so on, it’s a sort of chapter left open for us.”

How many EVO2s are currently in stock?
GS: “All over the world we have more or less 40, a similar number to the previous model. From a commercial point of view we are very happy, we know that some have spent more time understanding it because it is a more sophisticated car than the EVO1. Furthermore, it also the BoP issue has prolonged the work.”
After the competitiveness there was for everyone…
GS: “I would divide the season into two parts: in the first we worked on understanding the product, in the second we began to reap successes in the DTM, GT Open and CIGT. In the GTWC in the PRO Class we had some adverse situations that did not allow us to achieve what was expected, but winning the Silver Cup with GRT, which also won the 24h of Spa”.
Results that give you confidence…
GS: “It means we are on the right path, the car is good and has potential, we still need to refine some things. We will continue to provide maximum support to our customer teams and I think we will return to the start even stronger.”

Have you already thought about the WEC LMGT3 program, where you have Iron Lynx in Hypercar?
GS: “The fact of being represented by more than one team, in addition to the already well-known Iron Lynx, does not depend on us. As you can imagine, there are many requests, but it all depends on how many places the FIA and ACO will leave to the Manufacturers. We are waiting for the final entry list to understand what can be done based on the cars present, and whether there will be a way to add another team to Iron Lynx”.
From a GT and LMDh perspective, have you thought about any drivers coming from Audi Sport, given that they will close the program?
GS: “At the moment it is not planned, we already have a certain number of official drivers and we are still a small group because everything depends on the cars and programs that are available around the world, for which we have to provide support according to what is our abilities. At the moment we are happy with the ones we have, there will be some new faces arriving for the LMDh who can also be used in GT3.”
RM: “I would add that being a small company means choosing carefully which teams to support and with which drivers, taking into account priorities and potential. The strength of a team is created together.”

Will there be any promotion in GT3 from Lamborghini’s youth program?
RM: “Of course, but we must take into account that the GT3 championships, like the DTM and the GTWC, are of the highest level and to compete for the top you need the best. But it is also true that our philosophy is to find and develop young talents via the Super Trofeo, with a route between the GT series”.
GS: “I think that the objective has always been achieved in recent years. Since Squadra Corse has been here we have always wanted to create opportunities for young talents, without however forgetting that the level of GT3 has always grown a lot every year, also due to of drivers coming from F1, F2 and LMP1, with experience and speed in their hands.”
Which is the best route?
GS: “For a boy who comes from the minor categories it is not easy to make the leap into such a high level series, so the path winds through CIGT, GT Open, ADAC GT Masters and then GTWC, giving him the opportunity to take one step at a time and not get burned out right away. In the end you get to compete with the best in the world in this category and your skills emerge. I’m not just talking about speed, but also about consistency and the way of working both in the car and in the pits. To become an official driver you have to deserve it.”
