The recurring corporate spy of resident EvilAda Wong, has been played by multiple voice actresses over the years, and in the recent remake of RE4 was played by Lily Gao, who previously had a cameo as Ada in the live action film Welcome to Raccoon City.
His performance in RE4 has not been well received by fans, who filled their comments with instagram with insults. Gao disabled comments on his account and then hid or deleted all but one of his posts. You can see screenshots of some of those exaggerated comments on Twitter, with tantrums in the form of text like “You ruined the remakeI feel like I just wasted my money” and “Your voice acting was horrible in the re4remake…it sounded super stiff and there was nothing seductive about it. It didn’t fit at all omfg I hope they don’t hire you as Ada’s voice actress for another game.”
Fans have said that his performance sounds “boring” and “lifeless,” but regardless of what one thinks of someone’s acting, the idea of searching for a voice actor on social media to tell them that they ruined your day is completely baffling to everyone outside of the echo chamber of fandom.
It’s not like anyone at Capcom picked Gao by accident or forgot to direct her during filming. In previous games of resident Evilthe lines of Ada were delivered with exaggerated seduction that crossed the line towards the camp, while in the remake of RE4 she sounds detached and professional as part of her overall shift towards more realistic leads. It’s in the script: when Leon asks who his employer is, Ada del remake says “I never talk about my job,” a phrase that can’t be muttered seductively like the original “I never kiss and tell.”
More deserving of criticism is the fact that the audio quality drops noticeably in his lines in the video sequences. Ada generally comes off best in radio conversations, which have layers of static on top of them, making any difference in recording quality inconspicuous. Again, it’s not Gao’s fault that Capcom chose not to re-record her with a better microphone.
The versions of Playstation 2, pc and Wii of resident evil 4 included an additional mode called Separate Ways, a side story that allowed us to play as Ada and see the events of the game from her point of view. Although it has not yet been announced for the remakedataminers have found references to the mode in the game files under its Japanese name, “Another Order“.

Editor’s note: One day you’re proud of how the community unites to defend itself against the senseless attacks of some “broken” podcast strawberries and the next you see the dark side of a fandom that attacks an actress who is not even to blame for the audio quality Neither the script nor the direction they gave him in a project.
