A difficult race that of Ferrari in Mexico, closed in fifth and sixth position and never really fighting with Red Bull and Mercedes. According to Mattia Binotto, the performance of the Scuderia di Maranello can be interpreted as a false step rather than part of a trend, looking at the previous events from Singapore to Austin in which the F1-75 was closer to the competition, albeit not with the step to win. The reasons for the setback in Mexico City are to be found in a misinterpretation of the set-up, as well as in the conservative mapping of the power unit to preserve reliability.
Among the many issues addressed in the post-race, the Cavallino Team Principal was asked about the strategies chosen in Maranello, but also by the competition. As in Austin, in fact, Mercedes took part in the final stint of the race on hard tires, a choice that did not prove to be as profitable as it was in the hopes of the Brackley strategists: “In Hungary we have been criticized, it usually happens when we do something not completely right. Mercedes may also have lost the last few races for not choosing the right tires. It is not just up to us to make choices between different options with the risk of making mistakes. Today before the race we had come to the conclusion that the best option was to start with the soft ones, because having tested them on Friday we saw that there was not much degradation or in any case that it was enough to be able to make a single stop ”.
“It was certainly a race in which we still had to manage the tires to be sure we could survive the single pit stop”, Binotto continued. “This was probably part of the reason for our lack of pace today. Managing tires was undoubtedly a theme for us today, but we still believe that the soft-media strategy was the right one for the race ”. The number one of the Gestione Sportiva also revealed how the single pit stop was the plan from the beginning: “We had expected single stop to be the fastest strategy today. Our initial plan was one soft-media pit stop. In the first stint Charles asked for plan C, which meant a double stop, but he would have found himself in the middle of traffic and would not have been the right choice. The original plan was the single pit stop and we remained faithful to it “concluded Binotto.
