Netflix is moving into the video game industry, recently announcing the launch of another in-house development studio headed by Chacko Sonny, a veteran of the video game industry and famous for Overwatch and God of War. This will be Netflix’s fifth in-house studio for video game development.
Speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt event, the boss of Netflix’s video game division Mike Verdu confirmed that Sonny will lead a new “organic” studio for Netflix based in Southern California. Prior to joining Blizzard, Sonny was a producer and studio manager at Activision and later at Sony Santa Monica Studio, developer of God of War. Sonny left Blizzard in 2021. It is not yet known what the new studio will develop, whether a new IP or a project based on one of Netflix’s many IPs, or something completely different.
“He could have gone anywhere, he could have raised money, he could have done anything and he chose to come here. We are building a team around him and we expect him to reinvent what games can be“said Verdu.
And he added: “you don’t find such people coming to your organization to build the next “big thing” in the gaming world, unless there is a sense that we are at stake for the long haul and for the right reasons.“.
Netflix’s new game development studio in Southern California joins the company’s current lineup of in-house studios, joining the new Helsinki-based team. Netflix also recently acquired Next Games, Night School Studio and Boss Fight, making the new California studio Netflix’s fifth in-house gaming team.
“It’s still early days and we still have a lot of work to do to deliver a great gaming experience on Netflix“he declared in September Amir Rahimi, executive of Netflix Games. “Creating a game can take years, so I’m proud to see how we are consistently building the foundation of our studios in our first year, and can’t wait to share what we will be producing over the next few years.“.
