Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received, on Tuesday in Kyiv, the delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which arrived in preparation for a visit to the Zaporizhia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine, according to the Ukrainian presidency.
“We want the IAEA mission led by Director (General Rafael) Grossi to find a path through safe passages to reach the station, and to do everything possible to avoid the risks” of a nuclear disaster, Zelensky said, according to a video released by the presidential office.
“It is one of the security priorities of Ukraine and the world at large because of … the high risk of an explosion” and a nuclear disaster, he added.
Zelensky called on the international community to obtain from Russia “a complete demilitarization of the station and the departure of all Russian military personnel”, and the return of this facility “to Ukrainian control” with the establishment of a “demilitarized zone” around it.
The Zaporizhia nuclear plant is the largest in Europe, with six reactors, each with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
And the Russian forces took control of it last March, and its site was targeted by repeated bombing, and Moscow and Kiev exchanged accusations of carrying it out.
