The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant shut down the last functioning reactor after a fire caused by renewed bombing in its surroundings, Ukrainian state energy company Energoatom said.
Ukrainian officials also said that “any repair work on the lines is currently impossible” because of the attacks in the vicinity of the plant.
On Saturday (3), the nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, had already been disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid after several bombings in the region, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Ukraine’s Energy Minister Hermann Galushchenko warned that it is not possible to repair the line as any such work is currently impossible because of fighting in the area of the plant.
“The world is once again on the brink of nuclear disaster,” the minister said on his Telegram message service account.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops who have been in control of the atomic plant for months.
The IAEA mission arrived in Zaporizhzhia last week, following an agreement with Moscow and Kyiv to allow its experts, led by Argentine Rafael Grossi, to work.
After the team left, a permanent mission of the UN agency, composed of two representatives, remained in place.
In addition to this Monday’s total disconnection, there had already been an interruption at the end of August, also due to bombings in the central region and for which Kyiv and Moscow accuse each other.
