Matteo Salvini and Massimiliano Fedriga
The tensions in the majority are merely the reverberation of the frictions in the Northern League
Salvini he has little time: after June 9th the balance of power in the coalition could change and consequently his fortunes in the party he leads could change.
And the way in which the Northern League deputy prime minister goes hunting for candidates for Strasbourg bears witness to this: at the last summit of the League he even asked his regional presidents and Minister Giorgetti for “a gesture of generosity.
The response – writes the Corriere della Sera – was unanimous. Zaia he said no because “while a third mandate for governors is being discussed, I cannot give the impression of looking for an escape route from Veneto”. Fedriga said no because “it hasn't even been a year since I was re-elected in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and it wouldn't be a correct gesture towards those who voted for me”. Fontana said no because “I was confirmed in Lombardy as an expression of the good governance of the entire centre-right and a candidacy would not be understood”. Giorgetti also said no, but without saying it: he didn't really answer.
The generals' revolt takes place in the secrecy of a meeting, as befits a Leninist party. But when a leading executive of the Carroccio warns that “we have a tradition to defend”, it is clear that the limit is full. Just think of the suspicions of an early congress that have been circulating for a week and which Adnkronos reported yesterday. Salvini denied the hypothesis which claimed the leader's attempt to get re-elected before the European elections, so as to avoid the internal process after the elections. But it is a fact that some leading members of the League are threatening not to vote on June 9th. And that in Lombardy the congress has not yet taken place, as – they say – “the secretary could end up in the minority”.
In short, the tensions in majority – the Corriere della Sera always writes – are nothing but the reverberation of the tensions in the Northern League, the distorting effect of the maneuvers of the Northern League deputy prime minister who (also) on the third mandate “acted without informing anyone”, underlines an authoritative minister: “But if he thinks we're running after him, he's wrong.” Not even the prospect of the coalition splitting in Parliament over the amendment for governors, presented by the League, does not upset the allies: “It's an electoral campaign”, comments Tajani. Ready to run for the European Championships, if Meloni does. And Meloni will do it, as Affaritaliani.it anticipated.
