In the opinion of the commission, the sanctions of disqualification from holding public office, among which it mentioned the one that weighs on the former deputy María Corina Machado –winner of the anti-Chavista primaries in October – have been applied “disproportionately against opposition members,” which “violates inter-American standards in relation to political rights.”
(Also: Venezuela once again protests the reimposition of sanctions and accuses the United States of 'violating' agreements).
In this sense, he assured that “neither the Public Ministry, nor the Ombudsman's Office nor the Judiciary have acted with due diligence to investigate, prosecute and punish serious violations,” which, he maintained, is due to the “lack of independence.” of these institutions against the Government”.
Therefore, the commission urged the Maduro Government to “reestablish the constitutional order, guaranteeing independence and balance of powers, political participation without any type of repression or discrimination of the entire population and effective citizen control over the actions of the different state powers”.
