The launch of Xiaomi’s second electric car is on the agenda, as the company reached its goal of delivering 100,000 vehicles this year ahead of schedule.
The second model of Xiaomi EV, the car manufacturing division of the Chinese telephone giant, is scheduled to go on the market in February or March next year, according to a report by Caijing – an independent media – published last night, which cites a company worker.
This coincides with a previous statement from Xiaomi founder and president Jun Lei, who revealed that the production version of the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra will be officially launched in March 2025, according to the report.
Xiaomi officially launched its first model, the SU7, on March 28, and on November 18 announced that the electric sedan had reached its benchmark goal of delivering 100,000 units this year.
On November 18, Xiaomi also announced a new 2024 target of 130,000 units, surpassing the initial goal of 120,000 units.
On October 29, Xiaomi started pre-sales of the production version of the more powerful SU7 Ultra at a price of around 100,000 euros, almost four times the base price of the standard SU7 model, which starts around 28,000 euros. The company confirmed at the time that the official launch of the SU7 Ultra will be in March 2025.
Another source close to Xiaomi EV indicated that the launch schedule of Xiaomi’s second new model will follow a similar schedule to that of the SU7, which was launched on March 28, 2024, according to the Caijing report.
What is certain is that the second Xiaomi EV vehicle will be an electric SUV, which has the internal name of MX11, according to the report. This vehicle will share the platform and some components with the SU7, but will have a unique design with smooth side lines, the report noted.
The new car will be positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, one of the most popular electric models on the planet.
If Xiaomi follows the pricing strategy applied for the SU7, the new SUV will have a lower price than the Model Y, which is sold in the country starting at $35,000.
Xiaomi is advancing the construction of the second phase of its electric vehicle factory, which is progressing on a double shift basis and is scheduled to be completed in June 2025, according to the Caijing report.
That second phase of the plant will come into operation as soon as July or at the latest in August 2025, at which time Xiaomi’s electric vehicle production capacity will reach 300,000 units per year, the report added.
