In an interview with WindowsCentral, Phil Spencer talked about the Xbox’s future plansexplaining that the goal of Microsoft is to continuously bring innovation and value to the Green Cross ecosystem, not only through Game Pass, but also continuing to invest in hardwarenamely the Xbox consoles.
As we know, the strategy of the Redmond giant is to expand the Xbox ecosystem also through the PC and mobile market, as well as making Game Pass available on as many devices as possible thanks to the cloud, thus freeing it from the traditional model linked to the sale of hardware. This, however, does not mean that the company has plans to move away from the console market. Indeed, Phil Spencer has declared that in the future “he’ll have a lot more to talk about” it is doing this in the hardware sector, as well as in the services and cloud sector.
“Just last month we promoted Sarah Bond to president of Xbox, the hardware team is in her organization, the platform and services team is in her organization,” Spencer said. “We made this move specifically to ensure we have a unified focus for our roadmap innovation through hardware and services. This also includes the developer platform for Xbox consoles. This is about the innovation that we’re doing with our teams, but we’ll have a lot more to talk about in terms of what we’re doing in the hardware space and the services space — there’s a lot of work for us to do. We are always listening.
“When it comes to cloud gaming, we talked about at the beginning Xbox Cloud as a way to get into mobile gaming. And globally, there are many people playing cloud gaming on mobile today. But in a place like the United States, the way people use the cloud is primarily on Xbox consoles. They use it to check out games and browse games they might want to download to play through Xbox Game Pass, or even purchase directly. This has given rise to innovations we hadn’t foreseen. When we look at what customers are doing and listen to the feedback they give us, we think about what other things we can do with Xbox Cloud and the Xbox console experience.”
Are there also important news for Xbox Objectives in future plans?
Spencer subsequently reiterated the concept, explaining how the Xbox team has its hands in the mix on multiple fronts at the same time, with one of these which “perhaps” will bring important news to the Objective system.
“There’s a roadmap for hardware, a roadmap for services, maybe even a roadmap for improvements to the Xbox Goals, which I know is something you and many others care about,” Spencer said.
“We need to make sure we present these roadmaps to our customers to get them excited. We realize they want to know that as Xbox continues to grow, our commitment to them continues. We want Xbox’s core customers, who have always been with us, they feel respected.”
In the same interview Spencer clarified that at the moment Microsoft has no plan to bring Xbox Game Pass to PlayStation and Xbox consoles and spoke of the numerous “dormant” franchises that entered the company’s portfolio with the acquisition of Activision Blizzard and their possible relaunch .
