There is now less than a month to go before the 2022 season debut, which will sanction the first historic dive of the Rally in the hybrid world. For the first time, in fact, the WRC premier class cars will be equipped with a 1.6 turbo engine combined with a 100 kW electric motor, in accordance with the new FIA regulations.
For now, the manufacturers remain three (one, Ford, committed to supporting a customer team), but the battle will once again be very tight. Nothing can be left to chance and, in fact, Toyota the development path of the new Yaris Rally1 continues also in this last month. Outgoing champion Sebastien Ogier is also driving, announcing his farewell to a full time commitment while confirming his presence at the start of the Monte-Carlo Rally.
“Overall I’m happy with where we are, but obviously we can’t relax – said the team principal Jari-Matti Latvala – We are working 100% all the time to get everything ready, but the machine works and we are reasonably happy with the level of performance achieved. The most exciting thing is going to the Monte not knowing what the other teams’ level is ”.
“I would say that we are in a good position in the development process of the car – added the technical director of the Japanese company, Tom Fowler – We are quite ahead in terms of car specs and all details for Monte-Carlo have been corrected. We are building the cars for the first race, so the workshop is incredibly busy. In this sense we are in a good position while, as far as our overall situation is concerned, we did our homologation inspection with the FIA last week and we are just putting the finishing touches on the paperwork, but practically everything is planned to be present at Monte with the best car we have managed to make so far. We have put everything on the line and we are ready to go ”.
