The first phase of the works has an investment of one million euros; the term of execution is six months
The rehabilitation work on the Hornillo pier, in Águilas, started this Wednesday. The works, which have an execution period of six months and have an investment of one million euros, will be paid for by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, which contributes 75% of the total. The fine-tuning of this emblematic infrastructure will focus on the first 54 meters, where boards will be replaced, street furniture and lighting will be installed and a study will also be carried out to find out the state of the structure.
The rehabilitation project has three phases. The director of the work, Ramón López, explained this Wednesday that in this first phase “we are trying to set an intervention criterion, since the jetty had never been remodeled before. Now we focus on cleaning all the pillars that make up the vertical structure, so that we can assess the damage they have. All of this will serve to mark a mode of action, which will allow us to differentiate which elements must be replaced and which can be restored or repaired.
According to the director of the works, “the jetty is not in poor condition, despite its 120-year history. During its operation it suffered deterioration due to the place where it is located and the work it endured, but the exploitation engineers applied a protective treatment that has preserved it quite well. He added that this structure “is in very good condition for its current use, as it will not have to support trains loaded with ore or iron. as it was before. In any case, it will be much better when the work is finished.
For her part, Councilor Maido Simó pointed out that «today is a day of joy for Águilas. In a period of six months we will be able to see this first section finished. We are facing a living work. If the works are delayed, it will be justified, because the jetty must be restored with the greatest criteria and the best professionalism ».
More investment
To questions from LA VERDAD, municipal sources explained that, “facing the next phases, the idea of the local government is to once again request the help of 1% Cultural from the Ministry.” At the moment, the call to request the subsidy has not gone out, but the socialist team of Mari Carmen Moreno hopes to get enough investment again to continue remodeling the next meters of this emblematic structure, which has a total length of 163 meters. All this until the set-up is completely finished.
The Hornillo pier was one of the main bridges in Spain that linked the sea and mining. Its history began in 1887, when the English Company of the Southern Railway executed the Águilas-Lorca section and requested a concession to build the Hornillo jetty, an infrastructure that served for the massive exploitation of minerals from the Sierra de Bacares, in Almería. . These arrived at Águilas through the railway and were loaded at the dock. It began operating at the beginning of the last century, and between August 1903 and April 1936 it handled a traffic of more than eleven million tons of ore.
