Franco Parisi, candidate for the presidency of Chile, announced this Wednesday night that he will not be able to leave the United States, where he lives, to be in the South American country during the first round of elections, scheduled for the next 21st, after having been diagnosed with Covid-19.
“I will have to be isolated here for 14 days”, indicated the economist and leader of the Partido pela Gente, in a video released on social networks.
Parisi was not in Chile during the entire presidential campaign and had announced that his return to the country was scheduled for last Sunday, which he did not.
The presidential candidate informed that he has completed the Covid-19 vaccination course and that he has some symptoms such as cough, sore throat and general malaise.
In the video he posted last night, Parisi did not indicate a new date for his return to Chile. According to Parisi, he will have to take a new test in ten days (November 20), the day before the first shift, and that isolation, however, is 14 days.
In the different electoral polls, the candidate varies in position, between third and fifth place, behind, for example, ex-student leader and candidate from the left, Gabriel Boric, and José Antonio Kast, from the right.
US arrest warrant
The Chilean press revealed, in September this year, that there is an arrest warrant against Parisi in the state of Alabama, in the United States, for not paying child support.
The candidate and his lawyer sometimes manifested themselves saying that they do not recognize the existence of the debt, which would already reach US$ 260 thousand (R$ 1.41 million).
In the 2013 presidential election, in which he presented himself as an independent candidate, Parisi received 10% of the vote. Currently, he leads the Party for People, a center-right legend that was founded two years ago.
Elections marked by Covid-19
The campaign for the Chilean presidential election has been marked by Covid-19. Ten days ago, Boric announced that a test had confirmed he was infected with the new coronavirus.
As a result, six of the seven other candidates, who had contact with the leftist candidate, needed to isolate themselves and paralyze public activities – the only one that was not restricted was, precisely, Parisi.
All those affected returned this week to face-to-face appointments, after having had negative results in PCR tests they were submitted to.
This year, Chileans will choose the successor to the country’s president, Sebastián Piñera, who is facing impeachment proceedings, due to alleged financial irregularities pointed out by the journalistic investigation Pandora Papers.
