The Official College of Podiatrists of the Basque Country has warned citizens of the consequences of not taking proper care of this part of the body
With the arrival of the cold it is time to turn on the stoves and heating to combat them. Although the winter started out warmer than normal, the cold has arrived and with it the low temperatures affect the entire country. At this time what people most want is to return home to make themselves comfortable and turn on the radiators, but there are some customs that are not recommended. The feet are one of the most difficult parts of the body to heat in winter. For this reason, those who arrive with frozen feet try to speed up as much as possible to temper them.
The Official College of Podiatrists of the Basque Country has warned citizens of the consequences of not taking proper care of their feet. In winter this part of the body suffers a lot from temperature contrasts and it is very difficult for them to warm up. This institution lists a series of recommendations for citizens to take care of their feet. They emphasize that you should avoid exposing your feet to direct heat sources, such as the brazier or heating. Drastic temperature changes can cause lesions such as chilblains, a type of inflammation that makes the skin red and swollen.
Bringing your feet closer to heat sources such as braziers, stoves or radiators can be dangerous, especially for older people who may suffer from neuropathies or sensitivity disorders, and therefore may suffer burns and not perceive it. According to the Illustrious Official College of Podiatrists of the Valencian Community (ICOPCV), “it is important that the rooms where the elderly are kept are warm, but care must be taken with direct heat sources.”
How to take care of your feet in winter
The Official College of Podiatrists of the Basque Country lists a series of recommendations to take care of your feet:
– The footwear you use should not compress your feet so as not to worsen circulation. If the blood does not flow correctly you can suffer further cooling.
– Feet should not be placed directly on heat sources such as the radiator or brazier because temperature changes favor injuries such as chilblains.
– Feet must be kept dry. The humidity in the feet favors the sensation of cold. For this reason, they recommend wearing waterproof shoes that keep your feet dry.
– Practicing some physical activity, even at a moderate level, promotes microcirculation and prevents the loss of body heat.
– Drink liquids. Dehydration favors heat loss in the body.
– Massage the feet to increase their temperature and give a greater sensation of heat.
– Use wellies only on rainy days, these rubber shoes make the foot sweat.
– Take off your shoes when you get home to let your skin breathe.
