Concept art emerged in 2020 for an alleged Sheik game developed by Retro Studios for the Wii. Although the idea captivated more than one fan of The Legend of Zeldaa new report indicates that this project was just an idea that never got off the ground due to development problems.
According to a new report from Did You Know Gaming?, Retro Studios was experimenting with some unusual ideas, such as introducing new races based on Axolotls and mechanical automatons. In addition to this, it has been mentioned that history would have shown us how the Sheik participated in the creation of the Master Sword in Ocarina of Time.
However, the gameplay was going to be fairly straightforward, with Paul Tozour, ex-Retro Studios programmer, noting that players were going to use the Wii Mote like in “Whack-A-Mole”. This was what was said about it:
“I see people, you know, commenting on that concept art on the internet… and saying, ‘Oh my gosh, Retro was working on a Zelda game, that would have been awesome,’ and I understand that sentiment, but what you have to understand is that it wasn’t really a Zelda game. At no point was it anything like Zelda: it was an experiment gone wrong, set in the Zelda universe.
There were four or five wolves, maybe six, and they were just in their idle state waiting to pounce on you, then they would jump one by one and you would ‘whack’. That’s literally all it was, just detecting when the player moved the Wii Remote. If so, the wolf dies, and if you don’t do it correctly, you take damage.”
Similarly, an anonymous source has pointed out that another reason why the game was canceled in 2008 is because Mark Pacini and Todd Keller, important figures of Retro Studios, dropped out of the study that same year. For its part, it is unknown if this idea was presented to Nintendo or not at the time. On related topics, The Wind Waker Y twilight princess they could come to the Switch. Similarly, it would look like this Ocarina of Time in a realistic style.
Editor’s Note:
Although the idea of a spin-off focused on the Sheik sounds quite interesting, it seems that the gameplay was simply not going to be up to the standards that have so characterized Retro Studios’ work. It will be interesting to see if this idea is eventually picked up in the future.
