The World Health Organization (WHO) is actively working with the Russian side on the approval of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine. This was announced on February 1 by Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.
He noted that a new inspection to assess the production of the drug will be sent to Russia this month.
“Right now there is a mission in Moscow working with national regulators. In February, we expect to conduct the next inspection visit. Apparently, the process has resumed. Some procedures still remain, but I am quite optimistic about this, as is the head of the WHO, Dr. Tedros [Аданом Гебрейесус]”, he said in an interview with TASS.
Kluge stressed that he hopes for the soonest completion of the process of recognition of the Russian vaccine.
“This is a priority for all of us because the world is still facing huge disparities in access to vaccines, so we definitely need Sputnik V to be added to the WHO emergency list as soon as possible,” he said. he.
In addition, according to Kluge, WHO, upon receipt of relevant applications, is ready to promptly consider the recognition of any Russian vaccines.
“We definitely need the widest possible list of vaccines, and we welcome this. I’ve heard a lot about Sputnik Light, also used as a booster vaccine, and other drugs. We have not yet received applications for these vaccines, but if we receive them, we will immediately consider them, ”said the WHO Regional Director for Europe.
He also praised the Russian Federation’s capabilities in the production of vaccines, calling them phenomenal.
“We need as many vaccines as possible. And I know very well, having worked in Russia for eight years, about its phenomenal intellectual and production capabilities, so in this respect I am very confident,” Kluge said.
On January 27, the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Russia, Melita Vujnovic, announced that Sputnik V could be recognized by the WHO this year. According to Vujnovich, 16 vaccines are in the process of recognition, the Russian drug is one of them. To be included in this list, you need to collect the necessary package of documents.
