CDU leader Friedrich Merz names a demand in the corona pandemic. Satirist Jan Böhmermann reacts promptly and clearly on Twitter.
Munich/Berlin – Friedrich Merz has achieved an interim goal in the CDU. After the end of the Angela Merkel era and the catastrophic result of his predecessor Armin Laschet in the 2021 federal election, the 66-year-old from Sauerland is finally the chairman of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany. On Monday (January 31), Merz was confirmed in this office by postal vote with over 95 percent of the votes of the members.
Children in the corona pandemic: Friedrich Merz (CDU) calls for easing in schools and daycare centers
The previous chairman of the Union faction in the German Bundestag, Ralph Brinkhaus, had already given way last week, so that Merz is now both CDU boss and opposition leader in parliament. Ukraine crisis, climate policy, coronavirus pandemic – in this capacity, the new old hope of the conservatives tirelessly attacks the traffic light federal government of Olaf Scholz (SPD). At the beginning of the week, the West German formulated a proposal for possible easing of the corona policy. He did this on Twitter – and received criticism from the satirist Jan Böhmermann (ZDF) on that social media platform.
“The #pandemic leaves immaterial damage in its wake, especially among children and young people. If we open further, we should not start with football stadiums, but with universities, schools and kindergartens. So far, #Corona has not caused any major damage to children,” Merz wrote in his tweet.
Böhmermann responded harshly in a comment: “Schools and kindergartens would certainly like to ‘open further’. Unfortunately (because unprotected) everyone is sick at the moment, in quarantine or in homeschooling due to cluster outbreaks, you human-decoupled economic olm.”
